Brady Corporation Photoluminescent Materials Receive Material and Equipment Acceptance (MEA) Division Approval

CMS400 LogoMILWAUKEE (August 16, 2005) -- Brady Corporation (NYSE: BRC), a global leader in identification and safety solutions, has announced that its BradyGloTM photoluminescent products have received approval from the New York Department of Buildings' Material and Equipment Acceptance (MEA) Division. MEA numbers have been assigned for its BradyGloTM B-523 self-adhesive tapes and signs, and BradyGloTM B-552 aluminum-backed sign products. The MEA numbers confirm that these materials are approved for installations in compliance with New York City (NYC) Local Law 26. NYC Local Law 26 requires all Class E commercial properties that are 75-feet or taller to have emergency evacuation stairwells retrofitted with photoluminescent markings and signage by July 1, 2006.

BradyGloTM photoluminescent materials and products, manufactured by Brady Corporation, are engineered to the exact specifications detailed in NYC Local Law 26. Designed to install faster and last longer, BradyGlo's exclusive high-tack adhesive is as much as 30% stronger than other pressure sensitive adhesives, reducing both the installation time and overall maintenance costs when compared to other products that must be applied mechanically or with an epoxy-based adhesive. The low-profile construction of all BradyGloTM pressure-sensitive adhesive products also speeds installation because it easily conforms and sticks to handrails, pipes, and other circular shapes.

To earn MEA Division approval and individual MEA product numbers, all photoluminescent products are independently tested to certify compliance with specific characteristics in accordance with the Reference Standard RS6-1 A. These characteristics include:

  • Brightness Rating ("BR"): Minimum BR of 30-7-5, being the laboratory measurement of luminance at 10, 60, and 90 minutes, respectively
  • Washability
  • Toxicity
  • Radioactivity
  • Flame Spread

BradyGloTM photoluminescent signs and markings are available for a variety of applications for compliance with NYC Local Law 26, including:

  • Stairwells
  • Doors opening to exits or exit passageways
  • Corridors that serve as required exit passageways connecting two vertical exits
  • Doors serving as horizontal exits
  • Landings, perimeters of certain egress routes and individual stair steps
  • Certain hazards and obstructions within or along vertical exits
  • Horizontal extensions in vertical exits, horizontal exits, supplemental vertical exits, and exit passageways
  • Handrails for buildings approved and built after July 1, 2006 (optional for existing buildings)
